North American Young Riders’ Championships, Presented by State Line Tack Honored As “Horse Show of the Year”

Towerheads Also Honors Howard Simpson For “Distinguished Service to the Industry”

OLD MILL CREEK, IL— January 16, 2003—Towerheads.com has recognized the excellence of the 2002 North American Young Riders' Championships, Presented by State Line Tack, and its director Howard Simpson with a pair of year-end awards.

The 2002 North American Young Riders’ Championships, Presented by State Line Tack, has been honored with Towerheads’ 2002 Horse Show of the Year award.

Towerheads also honored Howard Simpson, Event Director for the North American Young Riders’ Championships, presenting him with its award for Distinguished Service to the Industry.

“Long overdue for recognition, Young Riders’ … has been a quality event since its inception some 20 years ago,” noted the Towerheads citation. “Luckily, a growing group of trainers now recognizes the value of this wonderful competition. Towerheads’ Horse Show of the Year is the North American Young Riders Competition at Tempel Farms, in Wadsworth, Illinois.”

In presenting its honor to North American Young Riders’ Championships Event Director Howard Simpson, Ken Kraus of Towerheads wrote, “I’m proud to recognize a man who personally has done more for the betterment of the quality of competition for a large and diverse group of people than anyone I know of in the horse industry today. He’s been doing it for a long, long time, and I’m proud after all those years, to present him with an award and recognition for service, way too long overlooked,” Kraus continued, noting that Simpson not only gives his money, but more importantly, he gives his time.

Many others in the industry agree with the choice. David Distler, FEI Steward General for the U.S., and manager or technical coordinator for Olympic, Pan American, and World Equestrian Games selection trials and for some of the most prestigious horse shows in the U.S., added his accolades to the Towerheads recognition. Several Young Riders’ medalists and chefs d’equipe credit Simpson for their success, describing him as a person “good for the sport.”

The North American Young Riders' Championships, presented by State Line Tack, is the premier

equestrian competition in North America for young riders, age 16-21. Young equestrians come from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Islands to vie for team and individual Championships in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing. The NAYRC is an official USA Junior Olympic-Equestrian event.

For many competitors, the NAYRC is their first experience riding on a team, as well as competing under the rules of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body for equestrian sport.

The NAYRC began in 1974 as an eventing challenge between the United States and Canada. A Dressage Championship was added in 1981, and Show Jumping debuted in 1982. The first complete NAYRC was held in British Columbia, Canada in 1982. Tempel Farms has hosted the Championship 14 times since 1985.
