Ireland Faces Tough Trial At Linz Nations Cup Today

THE IRISH SHOW JUMPING TEAM OF Denis Coakley, Lt. Shane Carey Lt. David O¹Brien and Cian O¹Connor take on 13 other countries today (Friday) at the
Samsung Nations Cup in Linz, Austria.

Currently lying Seventh in the Nations Cup rankings after a Third in Poznan, Poland, last weekend, moved them up one place, the Irish team will be hoping for a Top Three place again if they are to have any chance of winning the Nations Cup League, as they did in the 99/2000 Season.

Chef d'Equipe, Lt. Col. Gerry Mullins, said from Linz this morning: << It will be a tough one. It¹s a very big track, and there are crack teams here from Britain, France, Germany and Italy. We will be up against it.>>

The Linz Nations Cup commences at 2 p.m. and will finish around 6 p.m., Irish time.

The order of go for Ireland is 1) Denis Coakley on Obos Quality; 2) Lt. Shane Carey on Lismakin; 3) Lt. David O¹Brien on Boherdeal Clover, and 4) Cian O¹Connor on Waterford Crystal. (O¹Connor is currently No.1 in the World Nations Cup Rider Rankings.)

After Linz, Irish teams will be hoping to improve their team ranking at AACHEN, Germany (June 25-30), FALSTERBO, Sweden (July 11-14), LUMMEN,
Belgium (July 11-14), HICKSTEAD, England (July 24-28), and DUBLIN (August 7-11).

Ireland has already won Nations Cup competitions in Washington, USA and Toronto, Canada, in the current 2001/2002 season, and lies Seventh in the overall rankings with 16 points. Germany leads with 41 points. However, an Irish win at Linz would add 10 points to the tally and bring Ireland up to 26 points.
