Generous Wedding Gift to Help Horses in Need
John and Dilla Patrick, of the Argyll Riding Centre, have very generously donated £480, collected in lieu of wedding presents and at Dilla's hen night, to the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses).

Dilla, who has been involved in horses all her life competing in showing, show jumping and eventing, rode her horse out to the ceremony on the tiny island of Eilean Dubh on Loch Fyne, Inverary at low tide on 11 May.
Says John, a life member of the ILPH, who fulfilled his lifelong ambition in February last year by taking over the Argyll Riding Centre, "We would like to thank the guests for their contributions and their support for the charity."

McLain Ward Wins $25,000 Bayer/ USET Festival of Champions Grand Prix at Bayer/ USET Festival of Champions presented by State Line Tack
Gladstone, NJ- McLain Ward of Brewster, NY rode Viktor, the Dutch gelding he co-owns with Harry Gill, to the top of the $25,000 Bayer/ USET Festival of Champions Grand Prix presented by State Line Tack Friday at the Bayer/ USET Festival of Champions held at the USET Olympic Training Center in Gladstone, NJ.

Out of a starting field of 13 horse-and-rider combinations, six qualified for the jump-ff by riding clear in the first round. All six of the combinations in the jump-off went clear again so the final standings came down to the numbers on the clock. The first to go in the jump-off, Candice King, set the standard by going clear and fast with a time of 40.109 seconds. After King set the pace, the jump-off continued to get faster as Ward on his first mount, Rio, Nona Garson on Capital S, and Kim Frey on Conowara laid down fast trips.
The competition came down to the last two riders, Ward and Margie Engle, who currently sit at the number one and two positions respectively on the USET Computer List. The second to last rider to go, Engle, on Hidden Creek’s Perin, beat the previous riders’ times by over two seconds. Ward proved that he was up the challenge of going even faster and crossed through the timers a mere two- tenths of a second faster than Engle.

The Search For Sponsorship
Is your horse business or association running a horse show, clinic or expo that you'd like to beef up?
Are you a competitor, trainer, or instructor looking for backing to perform to your potential?
Is your horse association or non-profit looking for more support in carrying out your mission?
Sponsorship is one way to bring new resources to these horse-related pursuits. Sponsorships can provide financial support, in-kind support (goods or services), and third party endorsement. Perhaps this sounds too good to be true. But the key to developing sponsors is to realize that it is mutual relationship. You benefit and the sponsor benefits. The sponsor can benefit in a variety of ways that include: increased exposure for their company or product to an attractive market; tax deduction if the event or organization is a 501-c-3 non-profit; increased good will for their business image; third party endorsement of their business or product.

A Horse of Course

A Horse of Course
by Don Blazer
"I've got to warn ya," said Slim. "This hoss don't look too good."
"I can see through a little long hair and dirt," the snake skin boots with the silver tipped toes reassures Slim.
"Okay," Slim says with a grin.
Training horses is nothing more than teaching the horse a new language. It's all about communication.
Once a horse knows what you are asking, he's usually more than willing to do your bidding.
But, you have to say what you mean and mean what you say. You can't be wishy washy and say one thing one time and something else the next time. No horse can be expected to perform if he doesn't know the meaning of the terms.
It's the same when you go to the auction looking for a horse. You must understand the meaning of the terms.

Tired of boots with insufficient quality and durability?
Most riding and yard boots are made to a fashion standard of with a life expectancy of not more than 1200 hours of continuous wear and boots manufactured in the developing countries often are made to the even lower standard.
Manufactures, when designing riding footwear, rarely take into consideration that the equestrian environment is one of the toughest for a boot. A stable bed or a muck heap is saturated with urine containing ammonia and all kinds of other nasties - which destroy the soles and leathers in a matter of months.
However EQUITECTOR riding boots are designed to withstand that treatment.

New Broadcast Dates Announced For Badminton Horse Trials Special
SportsQuest International has announced a revised broadcast schedule for the television documentary, "Behind the Scenes at Badminton: Eventing’s Supreme Challenge". The program was previously scheduled for broadcast on Sunday, June 23.
The "With Equestrian Tact..." special will air nationally in the United States as a HorseTV presentation on the America One Television network.
The one-hour documentary will provide a detailed ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.
The delay in the program’s release was necessitated, says Senior Producer Melvin Cox, by the production team’s desire to incorporate additional materials outlining the rich history of the Badminton event. These elements include photos of past Badminton champions, including John Shedden, winner of the first event in 1949. Also to be included are comments from His Grace, The 11th Duke of Beaufort, host of the Badminton Horse Trials. "This is going to be an outstanding hour of television", says Cox.
Produced by SportsQuest International, the program will examine the many factors that define the Badminton Horse Trials as the world’s premier Three-Day Event. Katrina Barclay hosts the presentation.

British Reining Team takes on the World.
The British Reining Team has qualified for the International Finals at the World Equestrian Games in Spain during September 2002.
The Team, pictured below, travelled to Reggio Emillio in Italy for the European Qualifying round at the end of May, and was placed fourth overall, against an incredibly strong field of 12 European countries and nearly 50 riders. Five qualifying places were available in Italy for European Teams, so Great Britain's fourth place has qualified them for Spain and they will travel to Jharez La Frontierra in the Autumn to take on the other eight qualified nations from the rest of the world. This years World Equestrian Games are the first at which Reining will be a full medal discipline.
Reining is a fast and exciting sport, involving spins and slides on horseback which are spectacular and breathtaking to watch. The partnership between horse and rider has to be perfection to achieve the accuracy demanded during the reining patterns, and this growing sport is deservedly on track to, hopefully, become an Olympic discipline in the near future.
Team members, Doug Allen, who is one of Europe’s most highly respected AQHA and NRHA judges, and sisters Rosanne and Francesca Sternberg are all based at the Sterling Quarter Horse Ranch at Bodiam in East Sussex. Doug, Rosanne, six time European Amateur Reining Champion and Francesca, who gained an individual seventh place in Italy, were joined by Lauren Jolly, who replaced the side lined Bob Mayhew, for the Italian Qualifiers.

Trustees of United States Equestrian Team Vote To Support Recommendations of USOC Hearing Panel
Gladstone, NJ—June 17, 2002—Following last week’s release of recommendations made by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Hearing Panel reviewing the status of USA Equestrian (USAE), formerly the AHSA, as the National Governing Body (NGB) for equestrian sport, the Trustees of the United States Equestrian Team (USET) passed the following resolution on Monday, June 17 during a teleconference meeting:
"The United States Equestrian Team Board of Trustees supports the recommendations of the United States Olympic Committee Hearing Panel and votes to use its best efforts to implement the resolution of the Hearing Panel including the resignation of the USET Chairman, Mr. Frank Lloyd, and the USET President, Dr. Armand Leone, Jr. The USET Trustees look to the Board of USA Equestrian to implement a similar motion in a timely manner, including the resignation of Mr. Alan Balch as President."
The USOC Hearing Panel ruled that USAE does not meet the criteria for recognition as the NGB having delegated many, if not most, of its responsibilities to the USET over the past half-century. Accordingly, "the Panel recommends to the [USOC] Board that the formal recognition now held by the USAE be revoked."

Training With Attitude
WAVERLY, WV--Heeding is an attitude you have whenever you’re around your horse as much as it is a technique for communicating with him on the ground. You start heeding your horse from the first moment you connect with him whether that’s walking down the barn aisle to his stall or out in a field to catch him. You maintain that attitude all the while you’re grooming, while you’re tacking him up, and while you’re working him, whether you work him on the ground or under saddle. And it’s not over til it’s over. You maintain the attitude while you tack his tack off, cool him out, groom him again and put him away.
Students here at Meredith Manor learn techniques for heeding in their Training I class to give them a method for consistently and clearly communicating with their horses on the ground. But because heeding is an attitude as well as a set of techniques, it is ultimately going to apply to every interaction they will have with their horses. When students tell me they don’t see how heeding has any relation to their riding, I know they haven’t really figured out the big picture yet.

Chilko Explorer Ride  - British Columbia -
" Whether we ride to the top of adjacent peaks or gallop along open meadows,  . . . we all love to ride. "
Seldom visited and largely untouched, the Chilcotin is like a rare gem.
Few people have discovered it, but once discovered, it is rarely forgotten. There are very few areas in the world as beautiful to explore

This trip was designed for the intermediate to advanced rider looking for an exciting riding adventure in breathtaking country while enjoying the comforts of a wilderness lodge at night. After an exhilarating day in the outdoors you can play volleyball or horse-shoes, relax in the whirlpool on the front porch overlooking the Chilko Valley; or just relax in front of the large wood-burning fireplace exchanging stories with your fellow riders. Exceptional meals and fine wines are served family style. On one day during the week you will take part in a float trip down Chilko River or sightseeing boat ride up Chilko Lake.

The best bedding for your horse may not be the most expensive!
“When I come to choose bedding for my horses”, says John Whitaker (International Show Jumping & Olympic Champion), “my first consideration is their health, my last consideration is economics. That is why I was amazed to find No1 Horse Bedding not only performed better than any of the other bedding materials available in the market it was also less expensive than most!”
No1 Horse Bedding is a relatively new product which is fast finding favor with competitive horse riders such as John Whitaker, with racing stables and with veterinary practices. It is totally “dust free”; 5 or 6 times more absorbent than shavings and straw; minimizes ammonia; is easy to handle and is quickly biodegradable. Yet the cost per kg. is no more than the better quality shavings and less than many of the more “sophisticated” products.
No1 Horse bedding is produced from the highest quality corrugated cardboard. This is diced into small square pieces and then is passed through a unique dust extraction system to remove both the dust which can so easily be responsible for various lung complaints including COPD and small particles which may be ingested with food. Unlike many other “DUST FREE” products No1 Horse Bedding does not create its own dust with use. The result is a bedding material that wins no prizes for its looks but is the “Champion” when it comes providing the best care for your horse.
