Show Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Breen Wins Charleville

A
TECHNICAL course at Charleville Showgrounds proved too difficult
for most of the 16 Grand Prix entrants today (Sunday), with the
result that only Shane Breen on <Luandra> managed a clear
first round.
However,
under Grand Prix rules, 25 per cent of the first-round runners-up
were allowed to compete in the second round. This, however, led
to a two-rider contest between Tipperary's Breen and Limerick's
Joan Green, each of whom now had two horses in the second round.
But
it was Breen who was the best of the day, incurring just four faults
in the second time out, to take the Grand Prix title on <Luandra>,
with Joan Green on Eileen Mulconroy's <Sceal Eile> failing
to catch Breen on time, though she managed a clear second round.
The
remaining places in the jump-off were shared by the two riders,
with Green taking Third and Breen Fourth.
Weather
and ground conditions were fine for the 3000 Euro Grand Prix, but
Shane Breen said afterwards: << The course took some jumping.
It was very technical, especially the four strides to the double
in the last line, which caught out a lot of riders. But I am very
pleased with the result.>>
The
only non-starter today was Tom Slattery on Christopher Cunney's
<My Irish Paddy>.
The
next venues in the Kerrygold Grand Prix League will be Omagh (July
5) and Blessington (July 6).
