McLain Ward Wins Wild Horse Winery Speed Challenge to Open 34th Annual Lake Placid Horse Show

Lake Placid, NY—June 25, 2003—McLain Ward of Brewster, NY swept the top two places in the Wild Horse Winery Speed Challenge to open the 34th annual Lake Placid Horse Show.

Ward claimed the win by turning in the fastest penalty-free ride over the one-round course at the North Elba Showgrounds. His time of 60.700 seconds on LaBelle gave him the win over the 27-horse field. Last year’s American Grandprix Association (AGA) Rider of the Year also claimed the second spot by finishing in 62.162 seconds on Pinocchio.

The third and fourth places went to Sydney Olympic veteran Margie Goldstein Engle of Wellington, FL who finished with a time of 63.520 seconds on Julius and 63.985 seconds on Camille.

The 2003 Lake Placid Horse Show features the Whiteface Mountain Open Jumper class when it continues on Thursday. Other featured events this week include the Lake Placid Resort North American League (NAL) Open Stake and the Turtle Lane Farm Open Jumper Welcome Stake on Friday; the Hilton Resort Open Jumper Stake on Saturday, and the Juliam Farm Lead Line and C.M. Hadfield’s Saddlery Parade of Champions on Sunday, prior to the week’s main event, the $50,000 Budweiser Grand Prix of Lake Placid for the Whitney Perpetual Challenge Trophy.

In addition to those premier events in the Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix Field, Sunday’s action also features a full day of Hunter Classics in the Hunter Ring. The Lake Placid Horse Show features the $3,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Hunter Classic, the $3,000 NAL Adult Amateur Hunter Classic as well as the $3,000 NAL Children’s Hunter Classic.
