horse British Horse Society presents first ever BHS Safety Good Guy Awards

The British Horse Society is pleased to announce the presentation of its first ever BHS Safety Good Guy Awards, which took place at the BHS Safety Symposium, held in Kenilworth, Warwickshire (4 October).

The awards were presented to Roy Burek of Charles Owen, based at Johnstown near Wrexham, and Helen Kerry, a BHS volunteer from Hesket Newmarket, near Wigton in Cumbria, by BHS chairman Mrs Pat Campbell. BHS head of safety, Sheila Hardy, said, "The BHS wanted to officially recognise the outstanding personal achievements of Roy and Helen in their voluntary work to improve rider safety and so created the first ever BHS Safety Good Guy Awards. We were delighted to make the presentations after our very successful symposium, attended by some 40 delegates who heard excellent talks by a variety of speakers, all leading professionals in their field of safety."

Roy Burek has been a friend of the BHS for a number of years and has been the instigator of numerous initiatives including the BHS accident database, set up to investigate, record and classify equestrian related accidents on the road. He was also an active member of the former BHS Safety Advisory Committee, rarely missing a meeting and always giving wise advice. His financial support through Charles Owen has helped to sponsor the BHS 'Horse Sense for Riders' video and support the publishing of the BHS Riding & Roadcraft Manual.

Helen Kerry became a road safety campaigner in 1983 when her husband worked for Surrey County Council and continued following her move to Cumbria three years later. She has served as a BHS Riding & Road Safety examiner for over 10 years and has posed as a model, with her horse 'Gentle Breeze', several times on BHS road safety literature. Early this year Helen suffered a major heart attack and had to take prolonged leave to recuperate. Her idea of recuperation involved undertaking the arduous task of updating and rewriting, where necessary, the 11th edition of the BHS Riding & Roadcraft Manual.
