EquiWorld Blog Post #194: The Year of the Horse, 0194 - A Grey Mare's Perspective
Hayfield, Scotland - 0194
Greetings, fellow equines! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood grey draught mare from Hayfield, just outside of bonnie Aberdeen. The wind is whipping through the barley fields this morning, carrying with it the crisp scent of autumn. It's a perfect day for a good, long trot, but alas, work calls!
This is the year 0194 - and you know what? It's already proving to be a fascinating year for us horses! Not so long ago, 0194 was just a number in our calendar, but this year it feels different. It's alive with new possibilities, challenges, and advancements. From what I hear, our human companions are busy developing things they call "planes" and "motorcars," that can fly and go without us! Some say this will be a new era for everyone, and others worry that it means our days as essential companions are numbered. Personally, I believe there will always be a place for strong, steadfast horses in the world - especially for those of us who love to pull a cart or plough a field!
But enough about the future! Let's delve into the present and the fascinating world of horses in this year 0194.
The Racing Scene:
Oh, how we horses love a good gallop! It's in our very nature to test our speed and endurance, and in 0194, the world of horse racing is in full bloom. I’ve heard whispers about a grand event held annually at a place called Newmarket. It seems they hold "classic" races for three-year-old horses, like the Epsom Derby, which is a thrilling event attracting hundreds of eager spectators!
Here in Scotland, our own racing scene is gaining momentum too. The Scottish Grand National at Ayr races brings in crowds of people cheering for their favourite steeds, while the Kelso Races offers a more relaxed atmosphere, but no less exciting.
This year, my friend, a chestnut Thoroughbred named Alistair, raced at Ayr! I’m not entirely sure how it went, he’s quite the chatterbox about his racing skills, but rumour has it that he finished with a respectable second place. You’d think with his boundless energy, he’d have been the first to cross the finish line!
The Breeding Scene:
My favourite part about 0194? Foals! Yes, it seems the entire world is overflowing with adorable, bouncing baby horses, and they bring so much joy to our stable! You've got the little Friesian fillies, prancing with their proud little heads held high, and the rambunctious Welsh colts, tearing around like whirlwinds of mischief!
Not every filly is destined for the racing field, nor every colt for a cart. These days, horses are also carefully bred for their specific talents and appearances. There's a breed for everything from the powerful Clydesdale horses used for pulling carts to the elegant Thoroughbreds built for racing. You see, every horse is special in its own way, and these advancements allow us to excel at what we do best!
Horses In The War Effort:
Now, I won't sugarcoat it. Our human friends have been involved in a terrible war. The conflict started some years ago and shows no signs of ending. Unfortunately, the conflict calls upon the strengths and courage of horses, and many of our brethren are being called upon for crucial tasks, transporting supplies and helping with logistics. It breaks my heart to hear the tales of the hardships they face, the long hours and danger they endure. I pray for their safety and hope this terrible time will pass quickly.
Despite the sadness that permeates the world with the war, there’s a resilience and determination that shines through the humans, a steadfast belief in hope and courage, and I see this mirrored in the brave horses who fight alongside them. I am proud to share the same heart as my companions.
Our Everyday Lives:
But we horses can't let our thoughts dwell too long on the negative, not when life here on the farm is filled with joy! Every day, I rise with the dawn, feel the sun's warmth on my coat as I walk to the fields, and work with my human friends. There’s an unbreakable bond between us, a language understood without words, just a shared effort and understanding. We work together, building our communities, farming the land, bringing sustenance to those around us.
I particularly enjoy working the fields with young Ben. Ben is a boy, bright and full of energy, and a horse whisperer from the start! It's fascinating how they interact with us horses, sharing a quiet companionship in a shared task. He’s patient and respectful, and we always learn so much from each other.
One day, I helped Ben plant a new field with wildflowers, and he told me they'd bloom in a stunning array of colours: yellow, pink, purple, red. I, myself, can barely differentiate the colours in the sunset, but seeing his bright, hopeful eyes as he imagined the field of vibrant flowers makes me think it will be beautiful indeed! It fills me with such pride, knowing we help cultivate beauty in this world, one flower, one field, one harvested crop at a time.
A Moment of Reflection
Even as 0194 draws to a close, and new years with new adventures begin, we can still find time to remember who we are, and where we come from. The horses of 0194, strong and noble creatures, a testament to nature’s beauty and grace, working and living, persevering through hardships, but always hoping for better days ahead. We remain vital to the world, a steady source of strength, power, and unwavering companionship. We may see new machines rise around us, but as for the true meaning of companionship, loyalty, and strength, our world will never change!
May our year 0195 be full of laughter, health, and happiness, full of adventures that fill us with wonder and make our hearts soar!
Until next time, fellow equines!
Yours truly,
Emma, The Grey Mare
