EquiWorld.org - Post #270: Horses in 0270: A Life on the Farm
Neigh-day, everyone! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood grey draught mare from Hayfield, near Aberdeen. It's lovely to see so many familiar faces (and hooves!) on the website.
It’s been another whirlwind year here in Hayfield, full of new experiences and learning. I’ve turned 20 now, which means I'm reaching a good age for working on the farm – sturdy and experienced. My mane and tail have turned beautifully white, contrasting nicely with my sleek, grey coat, a constant reminder that time continues to pass, even if we sometimes wish it didn't!
This year in 0270, though, feels particularly special. We are in a time of transition and growth, both in the farm community and the world at large. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting events that are shaping our equine world, shall we?
A Time of Building:
As I mentioned, 0270 feels like a year of rebuilding, not only for the farm, but for many parts of the world. This has brought about an exciting mix of opportunities and challenges. We are seeing roads being constructed to improve transportation, and many new farmhouses are being erected. That means lots of hauling and carrying materials, which, of course, involves horses!
In Hayfield, I’m part of the workhorse team tasked with moving supplies to these building sites. It’s an important job, but it's always nice to take a break and watch the construction progress. I'm quite curious to see how these new structures will look, and how they will change the landscape.
Farming Innovations:
0270 is witnessing many new and improved farming techniques being implemented. For instance, new plows are being designed, which require less manpower, allowing the farmers to manage more land effectively. This is good for the horses because it means there's a wider variety of fields to roam and graze in, and a larger area for the farmers to grow crops. That means plenty of healthy and delicious grasses for us, which we horses love, of course!
Some new crop varieties are being introduced this year too. It’s fascinating to see how the seeds and plants we haven't seen before are being tested, cultivated, and harvested.
I'm sure these advancements in agriculture will lead to even more prosperous harvests and, perhaps, new and tasty treats for all of us. We're hoping that our hard work helps make a good difference!
Horse Breeding and Competition:
Although I am primarily a farm horse, 0270 marks the beginning of an exciting shift in the horse world. More people are beginning to think about racing and riding horses as forms of entertainment and even a source of social gathering. While it’s mostly in areas further south in the empire, we hear whispers about races and tournaments. I can only imagine how exhilarating it would be to feel the wind in my mane as I gallop with such speed and purpose!
Many farms, including ours, are focusing on breeding high-quality horses with impressive stamina, agility, and even temperaments. We hear there are special competitions held for racing and for impressive shows where horses exhibit their skill and athletic prowess. Someday, perhaps I can experience this kind of excitement myself!
Looking Forward:
Overall, I'm thrilled to be a part of this transformative year in history. The world seems full of possibilities, both for the horse community and for everyone. We are seeing progress, new opportunities, and a shift towards valuing horses even more than before.
My heart is filled with optimism and a little touch of wonder for what lies ahead. As a hard-working draught mare, I feel immense pride in playing my part in building this new future, both for our community and the world as a whole.
Thank you all for joining me today, and remember, good things are happening! Until next time, happy trails!

Author's Note: While the year 0270 doesn’t feature in any historical records, I find it fascinating to consider the lives of horses during this time, based on the broader historical context. This blog aims to provide a fun, optimistic perspective on horse life during the third century, drawing on the Roman Empire's growth and cultural influence, imagining the everyday happenings on a farm in Scotland. This also helps us to acknowledge the vital role horses play in history and our interconnectedness with the animal kingdom.
