Equiworld.org - Blog Post #272: 272 AD: A Hayfield Mare's View
Hello fellow horse enthusiasts! Emma here, your favourite grey draught mare from the bonnie hills of Hayfield, near Aberdeen. Today, I'm taking you on a journey through time to the year 272 AD, a year brimming with change and exciting developments in the equine world!
Now, you might think, 272 AD - that's pretty ancient, right? And you wouldn't be wrong. But believe me, back then, our kind were just as important, just as busy, and just as full of personality as we are today. In fact, if you could look back through time, you'd see that our lives and our impact on the world were intricately interwoven with human history, even back in the days when the Roman Empire was reaching its peak.
Hayfield, 272 AD: A Day in the Life
Here in Hayfield, life is peaceful and pretty routine. It’s always a bit nippy in these parts, but the days are lengthening, and spring is slowly taking hold. I can feel the ground warming under my hooves as I graze on the lush green meadows that skirt the foothills of the Cairngorms. Our human friends, the McGregors, are busy tending their livestock and tending their fields, preparing for the upcoming harvest. My friend, Jasper, the black Shire stallion who is our stablemate, is also out on the pasture. He loves to graze, though I think he likes it even more when the farmer brings out the extra grain, a special treat we all enjoy when it’s a bit chilly.
Our work here is fairly straightforward, mostly pulling plows, transporting loads, and carrying folks on long journeys. We are all hard-working souls, with strong muscles and enduring spirits, dedicated to providing for our families. And let’s be honest - it’s the life I was born for! I love to work, feel the wind on my face, and be part of the fabric of our village community.
Horses Across the Empire
I don't get out much, though I did once hear the farmer talking about these places called ‘Londinium’ and ‘Rome’ and how the horses there are very special. Apparently, some are bred solely for speed and racing - Imagine that, all that power, all for just running fast! He says the Emperor has stables full of majestic creatures that pull his chariots. Imagine all that prestige and excitement!
We have these fine looking greyhound dogs in Hayfield, they're often racing, but that's just over short distances. Can you imagine how thrilling it would be to see powerful steeds running at full speed around a course! Maybe one day, when the humans take me to the market, I'll see some of these horses for myself!
A Touch of Mystery
But you know what the most interesting thing I heard was? Apparently, some people are traveling across the land, not just in horse-drawn wagons but on horseback! I can't even imagine riding long distances without a carriage to cushion the bumps! Just think, a powerful creature like me - a mare just like you or me, only swift and fearless - covering miles of territory just to bring messages and information across the empire. What a truly amazing, almost mystical, job! I've been told some are even messengers of the gods themselves, sent to carry important prophecies.
Horses - The Backbone of the Empire
In 272 AD, our kind are woven into the fabric of society, helping farmers till their fields, hauling goods to distant markets, carrying travelers along roads, and bringing news from faraway lands. We’re not just work animals – we’re partners, friends, and the very muscle of the empire.
That’s why, even though I am a humble grey mare in the village of Hayfield, I know our stories matter. I feel connected to horses in other places, even though I've never seen them. They carry messages, pull chariots, transport supplies – all of us working together to keep things moving and keep this vast, exciting world turning.
Until Next Time
That’s my journey for you today, folks! Until next time, happy trotting, grazing, and, of course, being amazing equine beings!
Your friend,
Emma
Emma nibbles a few blades of grass, shaking her head gently as a gentle breeze stirs the air. "Such interesting times," she muses. "All this progress and yet, I think things will still be very much the same for horses, always loyal, always powerful, always serving mankind."
