EquiWorld Blog: #285 – Horses and the World in 0285

Neigh-sayers and Neigh-lovers, Welcome!

It’s Emma here, a grey draught mare with a love for all things equine! This week, we’re travelling back in time to a truly fascinating year – 0285. Yes, that’s right, almost 1750 years ago! From my lovely hayfield near Aberdeen in Scotland, we’re venturing across the world to learn about what was going on in the horse world at this time.

Buckle up, fellow equestrians, because history is full of surprises, and this post is brimming with fascinating stories.

The Roman Empire and Horses

0285 found the Roman Empire in a fascinating state. As you might know, they were absolutely bonkers about horses. In fact, they'd be absolutely bowled over by today’s warmbloods and Thoroughbreds, which, by the way, weren't around at the time! Back then, it was all about strength and endurance, and those glorious grey, chestnut, and black war horses were real heroes. Imagine the powerful sight of them pulling chariots in chariot races – the dust flying, the crowd roaring – pure equine magic! The Roman military was renowned for their incredible cavalry. These were no dainty ponies, but sturdy, courageous beasts, carrying legions of brave soldiers across the empire and playing a major role in shaping the course of history.

Even the emperor himself was often seen astride a horse! And believe me, there were some mighty Emperors in 0285! It was a turbulent time, with Diocletian ruling the East and Carus the West. But horses were always by their sides, in war and in peace.

Horses Around the World

The Roman Empire wasn't the only place where horses were making waves. Across the lands of what we now call Asia and Europe, they were indispensable partners for travel, agriculture, and commerce. The Huns, famed for their equestrian skills, were a force to be reckoned with on the steppes of central Asia. You might see some of their ancestors today in the sturdy Akhal-Teke breed, known for their metallic gold coat and incredible endurance. And remember the great Silk Road, a crucial trade route spanning Eurasia? Imagine the caravans laden with exotic goods, all led by incredible horses. It wasn’t just about strength, either, they had to be agile, intelligent, and fearless – all thanks to the strong bond with their human partners.

Daily Life with Horses

Life with horses wasn't always glamourous – they needed plenty of care. Imagine waking up early in the cold winter air to get the horses fed and groomed. Then, using their strength to help with farm chores, from ploughing fields to hauling heavy loads. They were true companions, partners in work and travel.

Horses in Storytelling

For centuries, humans have loved to spin stories about these majestic creatures. Remember, this was way before we had all these cool horse books and movies! But there was no shortage of captivating folklore. Imagine evenings by the fire, with grand stories of epic battles, fearless heroes astride their faithful steeds, and mythical creatures with the strength and grace of horses. It’s no wonder the horse was a symbol of strength, freedom, and loyalty across many cultures. Even the Celtic stories, often depicting otherworldly steeds and fairy steeds – the enchantment lingers even today. Horses are the heart of many of these timeless narratives, and there's magic in that.

What About Training?

You might think, back then, it was all about breaking a horse. But there was real heart and understanding, too. Ancient horsemen appreciated the unique character of each individual horse. They understood that building trust, through patience and empathy, was just as important as mastering physical skill. Think of the horses working in fields, calmly navigating winding paths, or carrying important messages across long distances. It required an amazing bond and real collaboration, more than just “breaking” a wild spirit.

The Legacy Lives On

0285 marks a time when the horse was essential to life, its strength a symbol of progress, and its spirit a source of inspiration. Imagine the challenges those horses faced, the journey they endured with their human companions! Today, even though technology has changed things so much, the love of the horse remains unchanged. We have horses pulling carriages at royal events, competing in majestic equestrian sports, and making us laugh and smile on a leisurely ride. We may live in a different time, but that connection between human and horse is stronger than ever!

Now, it's your turn!

I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you think about the horses of 0285? Have you learnt anything new about our equine history?

Remember, we’re lucky to have this deep history – it's a powerful connection that binds us to horses, making their place in our lives more than just a simple partnership.

Stay neigh-tastic,

Emma
