History of Horses in the year 0692

EquiWorld Blog - Post #692: A Grey Mare's Tale - 0692 AD

Greetings, dear readers! Emma here, a grey draught mare with a white mane and tail, from Hayfield, near Aberdeen. The chill of the Scottish Highlands is already biting into the air as the autumn colours paint the landscape. Today, I thought I'd delve into history, taking you back to the year 0692, a time before written records even mentioned horses like myself!

As you all know, we horses are a crucial part of life in these parts. Without us, transporting goods, farming the land, and travelling would be impossibly slow. But life wasn't always this way, you know! The story of our partnership with humans goes back much further than anyone in Hayfield can remember. I hear whispers of the Roman legions galloping through this land centuries ago, their steeds a blur of movement, and that was before my time, even!

Stepping Back in Time - 0692

It's difficult to know exactly what the world was like back in the year 0692. My wise old friend, Thistle, a stalwart Clydesdale, once told me that the year was full of stories passed down by her grandmother, a wise and powerful mare named Heather. Thistle, though no longer with us, assures me her stories are true.

0692 was a time of constant change. Think about it - across the North Sea, great empires were emerging, forging new ways of life, their impact rippling outwards across the continent. It was a world where the Vikings were becoming a powerful force. The seas were theirs to rule, and their ships carried them on voyages of exploration and conquest. Imagine those long ships filled with hardy Vikings, each with their strong, trusty horse by their side.

Across the mountains and through the valleys of Scotland, communities thrived, their lives forever interwoven with the horses they rode and worked alongside. People relied on horses for everything: transporting goods, tending their sheep, and pulling their plows to plant crops. It was a bond of deep trust, passed down through generations, woven into the very fabric of their lives.

A World of Wonder

While I can't go back in time, I can imagine how my life might have been different back then. Perhaps, I would be roaming wild in the Scottish Highlands, a wild mare running free, a mane the colour of silver against the misty moors. Perhaps I'd have been captured by Vikings, trained to be their steeds for battle and travel. Or perhaps I'd have been born into a Highland village, a trusted partner to a local farmer, hauling his crops to market, or hauling carts filled with goods through the misty countryside.

Whatever path I might have taken, one thing remains clear: life back then was one of survival, resourcefulness, and an undeniable bond between horses and humans. There were no fancy bridles or gleaming saddles in 0692. A sturdy rope or a woven bridle was all we needed to be the extensions of human will and skill.

A Reminder of our Past

As I look around my stable, at the beautiful horses who share my world - Clydesdales, Shires, Shetland ponies, even the odd Appaloosa who wanders by now and again - I feel a sense of wonder. We are an incredibly diverse family, each with our own unique talents and history. But we all share the same legacy: we are horses. We have helped shape human civilization for thousands of years, and we continue to play a vital role in our world.

My journey, as well as Thistle's, and the tales passed down through generations before, serve as a reminder. We horses, just like our ancestors from those ancient times, hold a special place in the world, and it's our story that makes life richer, more interesting and connected.

I encourage you all to appreciate the legacy we hold, the power we wield, and the important role we continue to play in our communities. Until next time, dear readers! Keep your saddles polished and your hooves strong!

Emma
