EquiWorld Blog: 775 - A Grey Mare's Tale from Hayfield
Greetings, fellow equines!
Emma here, a grey mare with a white mane and tail, gracing the fields of Hayfield, near Aberdeen. As always, I'm eager to share my thoughts on this fascinating world we inhabit, so strap on your saddlebags and settle in for a canter through the year 775.
It's a rather tranquil time here in Hayfield. The air is crisp, and the morning dew hangs heavy on the blades of grass. I feel a warmth spread through my chest as I nibble at the fresh green shoots, content in the knowledge that the day will bring familiar routines - pulling the plough through the rich soil, helping to gather the harvest, and, of course, sharing a good chat with the other mares in the paddock.
Being a draught horse in 775, we play a vital role in human lives. Without us, their lives would be so much harder! We power the mills, transport goods, and plough their land. The rhythmic click-clack of our hooves on the cobblestones echoes through the bustling towns and villages, a comforting reminder of our presence.
However, it's not all work and no play! This year, we celebrated the ancient festival of Samhain, a joyous occasion filled with feasting and bonfire gatherings. I felt a prickle of excitement when the farmers lit the enormous fire in the centre of the village, sending sparks twinkling high into the night sky. They even adorned our manes with brightly coloured ribbons for the festivities!
Life is good in Hayfield, though I can't help but feel a slight pang of curiosity about the world beyond these rolling hills. There's so much out there, I know! This year, I've heard whispers from travelling merchants about places like Gaul and Iberia. These regions are famed for their horses, especially those bred for war and racing. I wonder if those breeds are as powerful and intelligent as us!
What’s new in the world of Horses? This year has been particularly exciting in the world of equines, even in our quiet corner of Scotland. I've heard through the grapevine that:
A new breed of warhorse is emerging from Persia: These magnificent beasts, with their thick coats and powerful limbs, are renowned for their speed and stamina. Imagine the exhilaration of racing across the desert sands on such a horse! I feel a thrill just thinking about it.
There are developments in horsemanship and equipment: They’ve introduced some exciting new innovations like improved saddles with stronger frames and lighter materials, which must make the journey even smoother for both rider and horse.
The Celts are refining their skill with horses: In the heart of Britain, the Celts are known for their horseback riding prowess. I've even heard of chariot races where four horses pull a two-wheeled vehicle! Can you imagine the power and grace required to maneuver that? It must be truly captivating!
A Little Note for My Human Friends:I wanted to say a special thank you to my human companions for all the love and care they provide. I know they appreciate the hard work we put in each day. It’s our commitment and dedication that enables them to live a fulfilling life, free from burdens. Their dedication to our welfare, providing us with healthy food, safe shelters and grooming us meticulously is deeply appreciated. I truly cherish the bond we share.
Stay tuned, fellow equines! There's so much more to discover about our incredible world, and I can't wait to share it all with you. I'm so thankful for our connection and excited to hear your stories as well!
Until next time, may your hooves find fertile ground, and your hearts remain strong and true.
With loving whinnies, Emma
