EquiWorld Blog: Post #913 - Life as a Draught Horse in 913

Neigh Neigh Everyone!

Hello from Hayfield near Aberdeen. It’s Emma here, a proud 20-year-old Grey Draught mare, with a white mane and tail that could rival the purest snowdrift. I’m here today, as always, to bring you the latest news from the world of horses in this, the year 913.

It's been another busy year for horses and their human companions. Even though times are tough, we're working hard, pulling carts and ploughs, carrying burdens, and of course, helping to ensure the sustenance of families everywhere. I can't even begin to describe the bond between a horse and their human, it's a connection so deep, it speaks a language that transcends any spoken tongue. It’s a deep well of understanding that exists between us, and one that I’m always eager to celebrate.

Now, you might be wondering, what exciting things happened in the world of horses this year? Let’s embark on a journey together, through the pastures of time.

The Viking Presence - Friends or Foes?

As you know, we are in a turbulent part of the world right now. It’s all Vikings! Here in Scotland, their longships often sail along our coasts, searching for raiding opportunities. This doesn't always translate into peaceful interactions with horses. There have been stories swirling through the stables, whispers of raids on villages and farms, some of which resulted in horses being stolen or injured.

However, I’ve been told the Vikings actually love horses! They are strong riders and value the powerful war horses that they use in battle. Sometimes, they come ashore, exchange goods and barter for horses - but this is done very carefully, especially with the powerful draught horses that are our livelihood.

We can’t be complacent though, as those longships can turn up anywhere! Thankfully, they seem more interested in the towns and cities these days - good news for the horses living in peaceful pastures around the countryside!

The Life of a Draught Horse:

My life is a simple one, filled with the rhythm of the seasons. I spend my days working hard alongside the other farm horses, pulling the plough for our human friends as they sow and harvest the fields. In the colder months, we haul wood and stone, building homes and gathering supplies for the coming winter. It’s not always glamorous, and sometimes I feel the sting of a biting wind or the mud clinging to my coat, but the satisfying feeling of a day's work completed makes it all worthwhile.

This past year, we've been working particularly hard as a new stone mill has been built, a huge feat of human ingenuity that uses our power to grind the grains we harvest. You wouldn't believe how strong and heavy those millstones are - they take the whole strength of our collective team to operate. Yet, I wouldn't have it any other way - I’m filled with pride for my own strength and the vital role we play in our communities.

A Gentle Giant - The Donkey's Tale

Don't be fooled by their smaller size! Donkeys, the smaller but just as resilient cousins of our horse family, also have a significant role to play in our world. They are hardy animals, able to thrive even in the toughest environments. Often seen transporting smaller loads, especially on the winding paths that snake their way across our mountainous land, they are often praised for their calm and steadfast nature. This year, there was a rather amazing donkey at a neighboring village, he was known for his love of music, and could apparently walk in time with a simple pipe tune! Isn't that simply delightful? It reminds me that the spirit of the animal, regardless of size, is truly special.

A Year in the Stable

Life in the stable has been wonderful this year. The human companions take great care of us, making sure we’re always well-fed with fresh oats, hay and barley, and our hooves are cleaned and tended to regularly. Even the smallest detail is a blessing. They talk to us in hushed tones and stroking our flanks and manes with loving hands. I always appreciate a good brush before going to bed - sometimes I'll even steal a nap under the warm sunlight filtering through the stable doors, dreaming of green pastures and peaceful nights under the stars.

Looking Forward

My dear readers, I hope you've enjoyed this snapshot into life as a draught horse in the year 913. The coming year will hold more exciting developments and new adventures - who knows what new tales I will have to tell? As a loyal and determined horse, I remain steadfast in my duties. We are resilient, hardworking, and loyal companions - and the foundation of human societies around the globe! We horses are here to stay. So until next time, remember: even a single, neigh is powerful, so never underestimate the power of our bond and our love for the human world!

Take Care and God Bless! Emma.
