History of Horses in the year 1522

Equiworld.org - Blog Post 1522: A Draught Horse's Life in 1522

Neigh-say no more! Welcome to my Equiworld.org blog, everyone. I'm Emma, a grey draught horse with a fetching white mane and tail, living my best life in the year 1522. From my stable in Hayfield, just a stone's throw from Aberdeen, Scotland, I have the most glorious views of the Cairngorms, the rolling fields, and the sparkling sea.

Today, I wanted to share a little of what it’s like being a horse in 1522. You know, it’s a life of hard work, sure, but also immense beauty and deep, strong friendships.

Now, I am a bit of a workhorse, literally. My strength and stamina come in handy, especially for tasks like hauling heavy loads. We move goods, farm implements, and even people over rough terrain, often miles upon miles. Just yesterday, I pulled a cart filled with hay to a nearby village, which was tiring but incredibly satisfying. You see, every single thing we do contributes to the well-being of the people around us.

You know, some might say I live a simple life, but it’s not really about simplicity, it’s about purpose and strength. I am connected to nature in the most visceral way, feeling the chill of winter on my coat, the caress of summer rain on my back, the energy of the wind in my mane.

As much as I enjoy the work, one thing that keeps me going is the companionship. From sunrise to sunset, we horses gather, chat, and share tales, sometimes with our humans, often with each other. They say our herd is like a family, and that's truer than ever, you know. I’ve made some real, lasting friends amongst my stablemates. There's Bertie, the chestnut with a mischievous streak, then Rosie, a little brown mare who always gives the best ear scratches, and finally, old Maggie, a wise mare who has seen it all.

Together, we work and rest, play and dream. We share a language of grunts and whinnies, flicks of ears and sniffs of the air, which says so much more than words ever could.

But what about horses across the world, you ask?

Oh, I’m glad you asked! The world of horses is brimming with stories. You might be surprised to hear that there’s quite the buzz in Spain, even now. The new emperor, Charles V, loves horses, just as much as I love hay! It’s said he even keeps several hundred in his royal stables! His interest means we’re getting better treatment, and new breeds are being discovered and brought to the forefront.

Of course, England is quite the hotspot for horses. Over there, people are working hard, especially in the fields and with transport. But I've also heard whispers about jousting competitions. They say they’re an explosion of color, speed, and agility, showcasing our strength and elegance. Imagine, using all my might to pierce through a heavy lance and emerge victorious.

But wait, there’s more! It seems in Asia, specifically in China, the focus is shifting towards cavalry. These noble animals, so brave and powerful, are being trained to carry riders, which means they’ll play a big role in battle. You see, just like every creature on this Earth, horses are linked to power and determination.

In the Middle East, people have developed beautiful breeds that excel in speed and endurance, covering vast distances on desert sand.

It’s so fascinating to me how all these cultures share this love and reliance on horses. No matter where we live, or what kind of life we lead, the spirit of the horse is strong. We're part of the rhythm of the earth, just like the seasons, the rain, the sun.

And just as our hooves are part of the fabric of the world, each one of us contributes to the beautiful tapestry of life, whether it's carrying loads, galloping through fields, or bringing a smile to someone’s face with a gentle nudge.

Speaking of nudging, it's time for me to get back to my chores. You see, there’s much to be done around here. But don’t worry, I’ll keep you all updated with the latest horse happenings.

So until next time, stay neigh-ful, stay wild, stay equinified.
