EquiWorld Blog: 1569 – A Year of Strength and Majesty, by Emma
Hello there, fellow equines and horse lovers! Emma here, your friendly grey draught from Hayfield, near Aberdeen. It’s 1569, and as I trot along the winding lanes towards the village market, the crisp Scottish air fills my nostrils with the scent of peat smoke and heather. The year is alive with anticipation – the world seems to be on the move, both human and horse alike. And it’s my pleasure to share my observations, from my perspective here in the heart of Scotland, through this, my blog for EquiWorld.
It’s hard to believe it’s already been four years since my human, Duncan, bought me from the fair at Falkirk. He was looking for a strong, dependable horse to pull his cart, and I guess I fitted the bill. He always says I’m more than just strong – I’m the finest draught mare in all of Scotland! Of course, I have a little bit of a soft spot for Duncan – he feeds me the best oats and treats me with such care, always ensuring I have a thick, soft rug to wear when the weather turns chilly. And who can resist a good scratch on the neck, eh?
The Horse World is in Motion:
This year, 1569, the air is filled with chatter of important matters – and guess what, horses are a big part of it all! It’s amazing how much we are needed by humans – from carrying their goods across lands and pulling their carts, to assisting with tasks in the fields. In fact, just yesterday I helped Duncan deliver a consignment of barley to the bustling marketplace. We even got a little side show, with a few noblemen attempting to tame a wild stallion. I could tell the horses in the stalls were both curious and scared!
The King’s Favourites: Horses and Huntin’
Across the border in England, Queen Elizabeth I is making headlines. Word reached us up here in Scotland, by way of merchants and travellers, that she’s hosting a grand tournament – a “joust” as they call it – with Knights displaying their skill and bravery on horseback. The excitement surrounding these tournaments is something else. People seem to love the drama of seeing men and horses competing, with the spectacle of bright armour and banners. The Queen, they say, even owns a horse called “Black Prince”, said to be a magnificent black steed. Can you imagine?
As for us in Scotland, King James VI, our young king, is just as enamoured with horses as any English monarch! He’s got quite a stable of horses, with steeds of all colours and breeds, that are said to be just as spirited and noble as the knights themselves. Our King is known for his passion for the hunt, so I imagine a lot of our duties this year involve helping him chase after the wild boar and deer in the vast forests. But as a draught horse, I don’t get to enjoy those chases! Perhaps if I get to show Duncan how quick I can be at pulling a cart, I might be granted a few adventures, eh?
Horses on the Move in Scotland
As if the Kings weren't busy enough with their royal duties and hunting expeditions, news reaches us about a brewing rebellion! This group, calling themselves “The Confederation of Clans” is rallying together for change. Our local lords are scrambling, preparing for what could be an inevitable clash. These events make me feel a little bit unsettled, especially when we're tasked with carrying supplies for the army. We might not be knights on the battlefield, but even we horses are a crucial part of these conflicts. I can only hope these events are settled quickly and with as little bloodshed as possible, and everyone remains safe.
New Discoveries and Improvements
Even amidst the tensions and uncertainties, the year is far from dull. Word on the street is that the world of horse equipment is rapidly changing! Our human companions have been experimenting with new ways to train and ride us. And a new saddle, crafted from a beautiful, intricate metal design, was presented at the village fair just last month! Even I, a humble draught horse, find myself impressed with the attention to detail and artistry that goes into the world of equine equipment. The world seems to be discovering new ways to utilize horses and even improve their lives! It’s quite heartening, don’t you think?
Looking Forward to a Year of Progress
Whether it’s news of tournaments in England or the exciting happenings in the world of horse equipment, the year 1569 is definitely buzzing with activity and discoveries. There’s a sense of progress, an unfolding of knowledge and exploration that excites my senses and brings hope for the future. I’m fortunate to be a part of all this, in my own small way, playing my part in shaping a world where humans and horses work together in harmony and mutual respect. As the year unfolds, I hope to see a brighter future, where peace and understanding prevail. And who knows, maybe even a cheeky chance to gallop free on a beautiful summer day?
See you next time, dear friends! Until then, let your hooves find the most comfortable paths, and may your stables be filled with hay and the warmest love of your human companions.
Sincerely, Emma
