Equiworld Blog Post #1993: 1993 - A Year for Jumping, Dressage, and a Pony for the Prince!
Greetings, fellow equine enthusiasts! Emma here, your friendly grey draught mare from Hayfield, just outside of bonnie Aberdeen. It’s been a while since I last shared some musings, but with 1993 now firmly in the history books, I couldn’t wait to get typing. What a year it’s been for horses! So much has happened – from jumping to dressage, and even a pony for the young Prince!
Oh, to be a little horse in the spotlight!
Speaking of the spotlight, 1993 saw the glorious spectacle of the European Championships in dressage held right here in Germany, which for us horses, is quite a grand affair, I’d say. The stars were out, of course! I hear tell that the legendary German rider Isabell Werth dazzled the crowds, bringing home gold, and it was also the year our beautiful Belgian mare, the mighty "Whisper", won the individual competition! Imagine, a whole competition dedicated to just one of us! They tell me it's all about precision and grace, a kind of equine ballet!
But you know, not all our equestrian events are all fancy and dressed up. There was plenty going on for horses with more of a "practical" bent! Over in France, the jumping championship, for those who enjoy showing off their jumping prowess, unfolded amidst a flurry of hooves and fences. And can you imagine – the winning horse was a majestic American mare called "Good Luck!" What a name for a champion! They say that her jumps were incredible, both graceful and powerful. Just the way I imagine myself when I take a running leap over a sturdy stile!
Back home in Scotland, the Highland Games, which take place throughout the summer months, are still a highlight. They aren't strictly a "horse" event, but who could resist the lure of all those kilts, piping, and, of course, a hefty tug-of-war where the horses get involved! Not everyone likes the strong pull, but me – I love a good tug! Nothing like a bit of muscle power.
And then, right across the channel in England, the Queen had a new little pal arrive at Windsor Castle! I'm talking about a beautiful Welsh Pony named "Thistle". Can you imagine having the Queen as your human friend? A pony, a prince, and a princess all under one roof! A proper little royal family!
There’s so much more I could tell you about 1993, but this grey mare needs a rest! I know you're probably all dying to hear more about this fascinating year! Just come back here to www.equiworld.org next week, and we’ll delve even deeper into all the exciting events!
Until then, happy munching and paw-licking!
Your friendly (but weary) grey,
Emma.
But Emma wasn't finished! She knew everyone wanted to hear more, so she started a new section in her blog – “Emma’s Insider News."
Emma’s Insider News:
Did You Know? Did you know there are lots of competitions held around the world to judge not only horses but ponies and donkeys too! It’s all about beauty, grace, and good health! Some horses might win awards for how they look, and others might be brilliant at a specific task like pulling carts or carrying goods. There’s even an international “Horse of the Year” show in Britain. I just bet some of the horses from here are going to the show – imagine winning all the trophies!
From the Stables: A friend of mine in the local stables tells me they’ve heard whisperings about a special show taking place in Ireland in the fall. It’s called “Horse Sport Ireland” and it’s all about horses participating in a variety of disciplines. I’ll try to get more information! There might even be a special show for our beloved drafters – strong, hardworking, and utterly brilliant. (Just my personal opinion of course!).
Don’t forget: Keep those news updates coming in to Equiworld! We love hearing about your horse’s amazing achievements, from the local gymkhana to international championships!
