Post Number 2009: A Year in Horse-World - From Hayfield to the Globe
Hello dear readers,
Can you believe it's already 2009? It feels like just yesterday I was a coltish filly, kicking up my heels and nipping at the tail of the other youngsters. Now, I'm a fine, twenty-year-old lady, my coat gleaming a beautiful silvery-grey, my mane and tail a snowy white, the wisdom of the years adding a certain grandeur to my appearance, don't you think?
As you all know, here at Hayfield, just a hop, skip, and a jump from Aberdeen, the years roll by in a gentle, measured rhythm, but the world of horses – that's another story altogether. My hooves are always on the pulse of it all, and let me tell you, this year has been full of exciting developments.
A Year of Racing Revelations:
Speaking of the world, 2009 kicked off with a bang – the Kentucky Derby. That was a whirlwind of excitement! I watched the races, all that furious energy, on a big screen down at the local pub. It was truly fascinating to see the speed and skill of the thoroughbreds, a world away from my gentle plodding! My personal favourite, a powerful bay called "Mine That Bird", just seemed to rise above the chaos, winning with such grace. The thrill of the moment, the cheers, it felt almost like I was there in the grandstand myself.
It was no less exciting in the heart of Europe. The French had their Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Don't even get me started on how impressive a chestnut filly named Zarkava was that year! She flew across the finish line, proving herself to be an absolute powerhouse! She certainly put a new perspective on female horses. They really do have incredible spirit, even when going head to head with the strongest stallions! The rest of the racing world followed with their own exciting championships, like the Breeder's Cup and the Melbourne Cup, which I watched on television with a warm, fuzzy blanket and a mug of hot cocoa. What a way to spend a winter's night!
A Glimpse into Equestrian Splendour
My hooves aren’t only interested in the flat racing scene. The world of equestrian sports is also captivating. This year was truly magical, especially for the discipline I hold dearest: dressage. The European Dressage Championships held in Vienna, Austria was a visual feast. Those horses, beautifully adorned in traditional bridles and saddles, moving in perfect harmony with their riders - pure poetry in motion! The horses were so disciplined and graceful. It’s inspiring to see the artistry that humans and horses can create together.
Not to forget our friends across the pond in America. They held their National Dressage Championship, a dazzling affair that showcases the strength and agility of both horse and rider. It's inspiring to watch humans and horses working together as one. It really showcases the strength of the bond between us. There's so much respect and care between these partnerships, it makes me feel a little misty-eyed, I confess.
The Horses’ Haven - A Special Place to Belong
Oh, how I'd love to be a part of these amazing events, to feel the excitement and the thrill. But honestly, the biggest achievement of this year doesn't need grand stands or trophies. It happened right here in Hayfield. You see, my dear friend Maggie – the sweetest Clydesdale mare you ever met – found her perfect match, a strong black Shire stallion named Jasper! They've already produced a little foal - a healthy and handsome colt with their own little blend of grace and strength! I've always believed the true magic is not about ribbons and roaring crowds, but about the enduring, deep bonds we forge with one another. It warms my heart to see another one of our kind find their happily ever after.
From Scotland with Love
These were just some of the amazing things happening around the world in horse country. Each year brings new thrills and challenges. What can we expect in 2010, you ask? The excitement just keeps building and building, so keep those eyes peeled, my dear readers. It’s all very well for us in the know to marvel, but you’re not left out, because as usual, you're welcome to come along with me! This year I'll be sharing my insights, news, and stories right here on Equiworld.org and it's a big year for everyone.
Remember, just like our mane and tails grow longer with each year, the stories of horses, past, present and future, will always be here to fascinate, inspire, and bring joy.
Until next time, keep those saddles shining and hooves happy!
Love,
Emma
