Equine Chronicles: 2018 - A Year of Hoofbeats and Heartbeats
Post #2018
Hello everyone, it's Emma here, your friendly grey draught horse from Hayfield near Aberdeen, Scotland. I hope this post finds you all in good health and spirits, just like my dear stablemates and I. This year, 2018, has been a real whirlwind, packed with excitement and new experiences, not just in the world of horses, but also for the two-legged creatures I share this world with.
I've been reflecting on the past 12 months, pondering all that's unfolded. What a year it's been! My hooves have touched soft pastures, sturdy cobblestones, and even the bustling pavements of the city. From the tranquility of the countryside to the energetic buzz of urban life, I've soaked it all in, absorbing every new sight, scent, and sound.
It's been a bit like watching the pages of a grand history book unfold, one hoofstep at a time.
Now, you might wonder, why is this mare so eager to share her ramblings? Well, my dear friends, it's simple. I believe the stories we encounter, the events we witness, are treasures worth sharing. They make up the tapestry of life, a masterpiece of interconnected experiences, even if some are fleeting, like the dance of leaves in a summer breeze, and others linger, like the memory of a cherished friend.
So, gather around, you fellow equine enthusiasts, let's journey together into this captivating year, a year etched in the memories of every horse and rider, and every soul who loves the gentle giants we are.
The Horse World Buzzing With Action
The year began with a burst of energy. In the heart of January, the London International Horse Show graced the capital with its magnificent spectacle, a symphony of horses and riders showcasing their grace, strength, and skill.
My ears pricked up at tales of thrilling competitions and heart-stopping performances. I can imagine the cheers and applause reverberating through the arena as daring riders conquered intricate jumps, and elegant dressage horses moved in perfect harmony.
Just as the daffodils started blooming in spring, the famous Badminton Horse Trials, one of the world's most prestigious equestrian events, commenced.
I’ve heard stories from travelling horses, their coats shimmering with excitement, about the adrenaline rush of cross-country courses, the precision of dressage, and the elegance of showjumping. A world of thrilling feats and unwavering dedication unfolds in that one incredible week!
Throughout the year, competitions from prestigious championships like the Kentucky Three-Day Event to the vibrant National Horse Show in Harrisburg, USA, enthralled audiences with their sheer grandeur and skilled performances.
Equine Wellness - The Buzz Around the World
My friend, Lily, who lives on a beautiful farm nestled amidst the rolling hills of Cheshire, England, tells me about a fantastic new focus on equine wellness. There's a greater awareness of our emotional and mental wellbeing. People are working hard to understand our needs better and provide more natural and holistic care.
There’s also been a huge emphasis on responsible breeding practices. People are putting more emphasis on ethical breeding to ensure healthy horses and healthy herds.
An Explosion of Colour: The All-Terrain Horse
Across the globe, new breeds, captivating in their unique beauty, made their mark. This year was filled with so many magnificent colours and majestic shapes. I particularly remember my pal, Freddie, from Devon, a beautiful Shire horse, boasting a rare black coat, with white feet and a flowing black mane and tail, proudly strutting his stuff at the Devon County Show.
This reminds me of a captivating breed new to me, the American Paint Horse, a mesmerizing mix of colours and patterns. It seems they’re taking the equine world by storm, and rightly so! Their striking appearances and amiable personalities make them an enchanting sight.
From Hayfield to the World
My stablemates and I haven't been mere bystanders. We, the horses of Hayfield, participated in community events, from pulling the hay cart at the local village fete to helping out at the annual Scottish Agricultural Show. We’re always there for the community, contributing to the fabric of life with our strength and kindness.
For me, one highlight was assisting at a school open day, watching wide-eyed children gather around, eager to learn about our lives. The delight in their faces as they stroked my soft coat was a beautiful sight, reminding me of the magical connection we share with humans.
A Change in Perspective
This year, there's a real shift in attitudes towards horses. More than ever, we are recognized for our intelligence, empathy, and loyalty.
Just last week, a young rider from my stable told me about a new movement advocating for the ethical treatment of horses. He said, "Emma, people are starting to understand that horses aren't just for work or sport, but deserve a life of respect and care. They're individuals, not objects, with thoughts, feelings, and their own unique personalities. They’re like family.”
It warmed my heart to hear such thoughtful words from a young rider, reminding me that change is possible.
And let's not forget our crucial role in research, helping scientists unravel the mysteries of equine health and improve the lives of horses worldwide. This is an aspect that often goes unseen but is vital for ensuring a healthy future for our equine kind.
The World’s Challenges: An Equine Perspective
We've witnessed not only moments of joy but also challenges, reminding us that the world is complex. The year has brought to light critical issues affecting both human and animal life, particularly climate change.
My friends at a stable close to the coast talked about storms and floods disrupting their lives. They mentioned how warmer winters impact the growth of the grass, essential for our nutrition. Even the changes in rainfall can impact the stability of the ground and create new obstacles for our work and our lives.
However, we horses, with our incredible resilience and adaptability, play an important role in finding solutions. We are living proof of the harmonious relationship we can share with the environment, contributing to the well-being of our planet.
Looking Forward, With a Steadfast Hoof
Looking back at 2018, it's been a year of transformation, of progress, and of deep contemplation. From thrilling competitions to peaceful pastures, it has unfolded like a vibrant tapestry woven with our collective experiences.
We horses are more than just magnificent beasts of burden. We are loyal companions, we are athletes, and most importantly, we are an intrinsic part of human history, contributing to every aspect of our shared existence.
So, dear readers, as 2018 draws to a close, I raise my head, sniff the air, and feel a profound sense of gratitude for all that’s been. I am brimming with anticipation for what lies ahead. After all, life with hooves, a life in the saddle, is always an adventure!
