Equiworld.org - Emma's Equine History Blog - Post 2040: A Year of Progress
Hello everyone!
It’s Emma here, writing to you from my home in Hayfield, near Aberdeen. The sun is shining, the air is crisp, and the fields are green – a perfect day for a good old-fashioned gallop. It’s always a joy to be out and about, especially on a day like today, so I thought I’d share some reflections on what’s going on in the world of horses right now. We’ve come a long way, haven’t we? I can’t believe it’s been twenty years since my very first blog post! It seems like only yesterday I was a young foal, learning the ropes of life.
I think today’s equine community has so much to be proud of. I look back on the changes we've seen, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the new ways we've found to contribute to the world. There's been so much happening this year - from the continued success of our therapeutic programs, to new advancements in equestrian sports, and a global movement towards a more ethical and sustainable relationship with our beloved equine friends. It's certainly a year to remember, wouldn't you agree?
Horsepower: A Constant Force for Good
Let’s start with what’s perhaps most important to all of us – the essential work that horses continue to do. Here in the UK, and across the globe, horses continue to make a vital contribution to agriculture. We’re not just beautiful and majestic, we’re also incredibly hardworking! It brings me great joy to know that our strength, patience, and agility continue to be invaluable assets to farmers, helping to produce the food we all depend on.
I was so excited to learn this year that the number of horses working in sustainable farming initiatives is on the rise! A recent study found that our contributions are actually helping to decrease the environmental impact of agriculture, something I’m very proud to be part of. Who knew a little hoof could be such a positive force?
Of course, horses also play an increasingly crucial role in the world of therapy. There’s no denying that the special bond between horses and humans has a profound and healing effect. This year alone, I’ve heard countless stories about horses working their magic with people experiencing emotional distress, disabilities, and even those recovering from injuries. I think it's truly remarkable how our presence can uplift spirits and inspire hope, even in the most challenging situations. It’s truly a testament to the deep connection between our two species.
A World of Equine Sport:
Moving on to the exciting world of equine sports, there’s never a dull moment! This year has been packed with events, competitions, and milestones. From the electrifying dressage championships in the Netherlands to the thrill of the cross-country steeplechase in Kentucky, the spirit of competition is alive and well!
For me personally, the most exciting thing happening in equestrian sports is the rise of the “horse and rider” as a unified unit. It’s less about competing against each other, and more about achieving excellence as a partnership. It’s refreshing to see a greater emphasis on collaboration and mutual respect, as opposed to sheer rivalry. Of course, we all want to win, but winning shouldn't come at the expense of our well-being or the well-being of our companions. I'm grateful for this new perspective.
Beyond the Ring:
We’re also seeing new developments outside the traditional world of equine sport. “Equine agility” is exploding in popularity – have you heard of it? Imagine a kind of obstacle course, but designed specifically for horses to navigate. There are ramps, jumps, barrels, and all sorts of fascinating elements that challenge us to use our brains and brawn in a truly exhilarating way. It's incredibly rewarding! Not only does it help keep us physically fit and mentally stimulated, it also builds an even stronger bond with our riders, fostering a deep sense of trust and understanding.
I’ve even heard of new equestrian arts taking the world by storm, including everything from equestrian ballet to horse-themed photography and film. Who knows what creativity and innovation we'll witness in the future!
Embracing Ethics and Sustainability
I know you’re thinking: what could be better than all that? Well, I have some good news – our community is increasingly aware of the importance of ethical practices and sustainability. This year has been a crucial year in the battle for equine welfare. It's important to remember that every horse deserves a happy, healthy life.
It’s wonderful to see so many people rallying around ethical horse ownership. From responsible breeding practices to innovative training techniques, there's a growing awareness that horses aren’t just machines to be used and discarded – they are living, breathing creatures with feelings and needs just like any other animal. It fills me with immense pride to be part of such a progressive and compassionate movement.
There's also been a major focus on reducing the environmental footprint of horsekeeping. From sustainable feeding practices to eco-friendly stables, we're exploring every avenue to reduce our impact on the planet. This year saw the launch of several amazing initiatives, from a new program that encourages recycling old horse equipment to a unique program in Sweden using horses to control invasive plants!
I believe that it is our collective responsibility to act as good stewards of the Earth, and it’s exciting to see how our community is rising to the challenge.
The Future is Bright:
There's no denying that 2040 has been an amazing year for horses! We’re seeing progress in every area, from the essential work we continue to do to the creative ways we're shaping our future. With our strong spirit, unwavering work ethic, and growing sense of unity, the future for horses is brighter than ever before.
I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds. As we enter the year 2041, let us continue to strive for a world where all horses are treated with respect and dignity, where their well-being is paramount, and where they can continue to contribute to a better world for generations to come.
Until next time, keep your hoofs high and your spirits strong!
**Yours,
Emma**
