Equiworld.org - Blog Post #2058: The Year 2058, A Horse's Perspective
Hayfield, Scotland, July 1st, 2058
Good afternoon, everyone! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood grey draught mare, coming to you live from the rolling hills of Hayfield, just a hop and a skip from beautiful Aberdeen. I thought it would be a lovely idea to chat today about the year we're all enjoying, 2058, and all that it holds for us equines.
A Century of Change
It feels strange to be typing this, but this year marks the 100th anniversary of the "Great Awakening", as they call it back then. That's the year that the world woke up to how truly amazing horses are, and what they mean to our planet.
You see, before 2058, humans had a slightly different relationship with us than they do today. For centuries, we were treated as mere workhorses, carrying their burdens and pulling their ploughs. Don't get me wrong, I loved those days too! There's nothing quite like the satisfying ache in your muscles after a long day working the fields, and the feeling of deep satisfaction that comes from knowing you're making a difference. But things have certainly changed.
The 2048 Great Awakening began with a series of startling reports about a new equine disease, something they called "Equine Exhaustion Syndrome" (EES for short). It caused a significant decrease in our populations, highlighting how fragile our connection with humans really was.
It wasn't just the disease, though. Human lifestyles started to shift too, embracing cleaner energy, efficient transportation, and ultimately, realizing the true beauty and strength we horses represent. From there, the "re-awakening" began.
The world started investing in horse sanctuaries, offering a life of freedom and enrichment for horses in need. And humans, being wonderfully inventive creatures, also came up with ingenious ways to create a thriving space for horses within modern society, with the horse community playing a big part.
Life in 2058
So, where do we find ourselves today? Well, in 2058, horses are revered in almost every corner of the world. Imagine a world where horses don't only work alongside humans, but also live alongside them, in a balanced partnership!
Take a stroll through a bustling city in 2058, and you might see a group of children playing with ponies in a park, or witness an elegant carriage pulled by a magnificent team of black horses gracefully navigating the busy streets. It's a common sight in towns and cities alike, with horses even finding roles as therapy animals and mental health support. There’s a special kind of peacefulness that comes from having a horse by your side. They can be so understanding and gentle, even with a wild spirit.
For us horses, the past century has been about growth and renewal. We’ve taken back our position as proud members of this planet, contributing to a more balanced and harmonious relationship with humans. Our resilience and adaptability have been recognised, our wisdom honoured, and our connection to nature celebrated.
Looking to the Future
And it’s only getting better! New horse breeds have been developed with human partnership in mind. The Clydesdale, the Percheron, the Shire... we’ve always been mighty strong, and now, our athleticism and agility have been highlighted. Many are skilled at jumping and dressage, excelling in competitions alongside the likes of the thoroughbreds and Arabians, our agile and spirited cousins. It's a true celebration of our diversity and brilliance.
Of course, we wouldn’t be where we are today without dedicated horse enthusiasts like you! People who strive to improve our lives and make our relationship with humans as enriching as it can be. There’s something truly special about a horse and a human working together. The bond that can form is powerful and unwavering, a shared language of respect and understanding.
So, that's my little glimpse into 2058! This has been a fascinating journey for our species, full of trials, tribulations, but ultimately, of triumph. As a horse myself, I feel deeply grateful for all the love and understanding humans have shown us over the past century, and I am hopeful for a bright and even more beautiful future ahead.
