Olympic Fever Hits Tokyo!

The equestrian world is abuzz with anticipation for the Tokyo Olympics. Just a week away from the opening ceremony, Team GB riders are feeling the pressure and excitement as they finalize their preparations.

  • Dressage: The ever-reliable Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester are set to lead the British Dressage charge in Tokyo. With an impressive medal haul under their belts, both riders have their sights set on claiming a coveted Olympic medal. Youngster Lottie Fry, on her impressive gelding Everdale, is also in contention and poised for a breakout performance.
  • Eventing: The British eventing team is arguably one of the strongest in the world. World champions Oliver Townend and Laura Collett are joined by the seasoned Piggy March and the young and talented Tom McEwen, making for a formidable team with a wealth of experience.
  • Show Jumping: Ben Maher, Olympic Champion from the Rio Games, is returning to the Games alongside the talented Harry Charles and the experienced Holly Smith. With their exceptional show jumping talent, the trio are hopeful for a podium finish.

Across the world, riders are vying for their place on the podium in the Tokyo arena. The competition promises to be fierce, with Germany, Netherlands, and the United States posing stiff challenges. We wish all participating riders the best of luck as they chase Olympic glory!

A Masterclass in Sidesaddle:

Last week, the renowned UK sidesaddle competition at Burghley Horse Trials was held. It attracted a host of skilled riders vying for a spot in the coveted championship final.

It was Lucy Towers riding her grey mare, who shone brightest on the day. They produced an exquisite performance, demonstrating elegance, precision and poise, earning them a well-deserved victory in the prestigious class. The class was another triumph for this long-established, elegant form of equestrianism, and a testament to the talent and dedication of the competitors.

Polo on the Pitch: The Buzz in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires was buzzing with energy as the Argentine Open championship, one of the world’s most coveted polo titles, got underway. Teams from around the world assembled to showcase their skills, teamwork, and passion.

The action on the field was nothing short of breathtaking, with some stunning goal scores, strategic plays, and a fierce spirit of competition. As the tournament progresses, all eyes are on the players, and eager anticipation builds for the grand finale.

From the Dressage Arena to the Field

It's not every day a dressage champion takes to the polo field, but that is exactly what American equestrian Karen Craven, a US Olympic Dressage Rider, has done. Now competing on the polo field with the Los Angeles Polo team, Craven's switch from dressage to polo is making waves in the sport, demonstrating the adaptability of equestrian athletes and their love for horses across all disciplines.

Breed Spotlight: The Connemara Pony

This week, we take a closer look at the hardy and versatile Connemara Pony. Native to the wild and rugged landscape of Connemara, Ireland, the breed is known for its strength, resilience, and captivating beauty.

The Connemara Pony, with its distinctive thick mane and tail, stands out for its exceptional jumping ability and natural athleticism. They thrive in a variety of roles, excelling in disciplines like show jumping, eventing, dressage, driving and hacking. They also make excellent family ponies, being temperamentally sound and eager to please. Their compact size makes them ideal for smaller riders and they make a wonderful mount for those looking for a loyal and capable companion.

More from the World of Equestrianism

Record Breaking Ride: The equestrian community was stunned as a French rider, who remained anonymous, set a new world record for the longest horseback ride ever undertaken, completing a journey of over 3000 miles across the Sahara desert in just over 72 days. An amazing achievement by any standard, especially given the challenges of the Sahara’s unforgiving environment.

Spotlight on the US Open: The US Open Jumpers and Hunters, held in Las Vegas, attracted top riders from across the country, vying for the coveted championship titles.
