Equiworld Blog Post #2004: The Year the Grey Mare Galloped

Hello, darling Equine enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your favourite grey mare with the snowy mane and tail, writing to you all the way from the windswept hills of Hayfield near Aberdeen.

Goodness me, 2004 feels like a lifetime ago now, but that year was one I shall never forget! So grab a warm cuppa and settle in, because this old mare is going to spill the tea on what went down in the equestrian world that year.

I remember, I was just turning 20 then, feeling a little jaded with my usual work hauling hay and pulling the farm cart. Don't get me wrong, I love my life in the highlands, with the smell of fresh-cut grass and the freedom to roam the fields, but there was a restlessness stirring within me. The spirit of adventure! A yearning for something more than just my daily routine.

Thankfully, fate had a little treat in store for me. A group of young students came to our farm, bright-eyed and keen on learning all about horses. These weren't the usual lot – they were interested in more than just the basics. They talked about 'dressage' and 'show jumping', words that set my ears twitching. I'd heard those words in whispers from older horses on our travels, always with a hint of magic and excitement attached.

So, these charming students took me under their wing and began to train me in the art of dressage. I was hesitant at first, but the rhythm and elegance of it all quickly captivated me. It felt like dancing on my hooves, like flowing water carrying me through movements both precise and graceful.

Oh, my, 2004 was a whirlwind of learning! We worked diligently together, practising every day, those students so full of energy and enthusiasm. We had days of joy and progress, followed by frustrating stumbles where my body didn’t seem to cooperate, my tired old legs rebelling against the new movements. There were days when my temper flared, and those sweet girls had to be so patient with their grumpy mare!

But, it all paid off in the end. By the summer of 2004, I found myself competing at a local show, a bit nervous, but excited as a newborn foal. My students were so proud as they held my reins, and their whispers encouraged me throughout the competition.

You’ll never believe what happened next… we won! Yes, this grey mare took first place! My little group of friends all squealed and jumped with glee, their faces alight with joy, their delight as contagious as laughter.

It was that day that I realised my true calling – dressage! There’s a kind of majesty to the discipline that captures my spirit like no other. Perhaps the life I lived up until then had not been about drudgery and tedium, but about preparing me for a future I didn't even know existed!

But of course, my little journey doesn’t stop there! In 2004, the equestrian world was alive with news!

For the racing fans, it was the year of “Best Mate”, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup for an unprecedented third time, a true champion of the track. His rider, Nico de Boinville, also enjoyed a magnificent year, celebrating multiple victories.

Horse racing wasn’t the only buzz around in 2004, though. Dressage competitions all over the country were experiencing a real boom in popularity! People were fascinated by the elegance and athleticism of these disciplines, attracted to the dedication and commitment needed for dressage and show jumping. There was a shift towards appreciating the horse beyond its working or riding capacity, seeing it as a true partner and athlete.

And speaking of athletes, did you hear about the magnificent "Anky van Grunsven", an absolute goddess of the dressage world? Her triumphs continued in 2004, a testament to the powerful connection between rider and horse.

But of course, it’s not just the competition that makes this year memorable. I can still see it, the photographs from the Olympics in Athens, the horse events in the sunshine, the colours of the Greek landscapes contrasting against the lean, muscled bodies of those magnificent equine athletes.

2004 was a year of achievement and progress, a testament to the beautiful relationship between human and horse. It’s a year that made me, old grey mare that I am, feel like the world is a place of infinite possibility!

Until next time, my dear readers! Enjoy your rides, and remember, the world of horses is always ready for a new adventure, for every age and every type of horse!

Love,

Emma
