The Year of the Mare: A Look Back at 2003, Blog Post #2003

Hello, all my dear equine friends! Emma here, your trusty grey draught mare from the rolling hills of Hayfield, just outside bonnie Aberdeen. Today, we’re taking a trip back in time, a little jaunt to the year 2003, a year filled with memories and adventures both big and small for us horsey folk.

Oh, the joys of that year! The heather on the moors was blooming beautifully, its purple haze painting the hillsides in a romantic dream. The scent of freshly cut hay drifted on the breeze as I helped pull in the harvest for farmer Angus, and the sound of birdsong was a constant serenade all around. Ah, such sweet memories!

Speaking of farmer Angus, that wonderful man is as much a part of the landscape of my memories as the rolling hills themselves. His love for horses is truly infectious. He treated me and the rest of his charges with the utmost respect, always speaking gently, with understanding in his eyes, as if we could comprehend every word he uttered. His care and dedication to our wellbeing were unwavering.

I often wonder how those on the other side of the world experienced 2003. While the wind whistled across the heather, carrying tales of sheep grazing on the slopes and the far-off city lights glittering like a starry sky, the world outside Scotland bustled with its own vibrant horsey stories.

Now, let me see... ah yes! 2003 was a rather exciting year for us equine enthusiasts across the globe! Over in the USA, they were holding the first ever FEI World Breeding Dressage Championships in Verden, Germany. Imagine the fanfare, the polished tack, and the grace and elegance of those beautifully trained horses! I would have loved to see that!

Back home in the UK, 2003 saw the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in full swing! Such a grand affair, fit for royalty, with magnificent horses, decorated carriages, and processions filled with joyous onlookers. It made my heart swell with pride, watching the beautiful creatures carry out their roles with such poise and grace. It’s quite humbling, really.

It was a time of change, too. You know how everyone’s talking about ‘sustainable living’ these days? Well, 2003 marked a significant shift towards a more sustainable approach to horse ownership and care. More and more people were realizing the importance of considering our environment and were embracing eco-friendly practices.

And, my friends, don’t even get me started on the advancements in veterinary care! I remember back then, there were all sorts of new medicines and treatments being developed, things that were really changing the lives of horses for the better. It was like a whole new world opening up to us.

But enough about the grand things, what about the simple pleasures? Ah, there was nothing better than a sunny afternoon in 2003, grazing in the field with my dear friend, Rosie, the piebald pony. She was a whirlwind of energy, full of playful antics and endless stories. We would often spend hours sharing tales of our escapades, grazing leisurely under the sun’s warmth.

One of the most memorable moments of 2003 for me, though, was the arrival of a new foal in the barn. The little chestnut filly, Belle, was so full of life! We’d often watch her prance around, learning to gallop and roll in the grass. Her mischievous eyes sparkled with delight as she explored the world around her. She would often try to pull me into her playful adventures, which was no mean feat, given my majestic girth and a certain lack of agility! But she never gave up! I miss that playful energy!

Even though I've been gone a few years now, 2003 holds a special place in my heart. It was a time of exciting change, unwavering kindness, and laughter that echoed in the breeze. It was a year full of love, simple joys, and a deeper appreciation for our shared journey with humans. I’m sure you’ve all got wonderful memories from 2003. Do tell me all about them, dear readers! Until next time, remember to live, love, and learn.

With love and gentle snorts, Emma
