EquiWorld.org: Post #2081 – Horses in 2081 – A Look Back with Emma
Hello, fellow equine enthusiasts! This is Emma, a proud grey draught mare with a heart full of stories, living in the breathtaking Hayfield, near Aberdeen in Scotland. As the year 2081 races towards its end, I find myself reflecting upon our extraordinary equine heritage, upon the journey horses have taken through time. It's fascinating to think about the world as it was when my great-great-great grandparents were young, and to consider the way our relationship with humans has changed.
I often picture my ancestors, their powerful frames straining under heavy carts, their manes whipping in the wind as they helped farmers work the land. We were the heart and muscle of a nation, essential partners in a world that still depended on physical strength. Then came the rise of machinery – a new era where human ingenuity outpaced our brawn. Yet, as my grandfather always told me, horses are more than just working machines. We're companions, we're confidantes, and we hold within our hearts an ancient spirit, a sense of grace and resilience that binds us to our human friends.
Today, our roles have evolved. It's true, we aren't relied upon for daily agricultural tasks in the way we once were. The clang of metal implements against earth has faded into a distant memory for most of us. But our stories haven't ended. In fact, they've taken on exciting new chapters! The bond between human and horse remains, a partnership now driven by mutual love, respect, and the thrill of adventure.
From the sweeping meadows of Scotland to the vibrant cityscapes, horses like me continue to bring joy and vitality to life. Our strength and resilience still find purpose in a variety of exciting activities.
A Horse's World in 2081 – A Vibrant tapestryAs I mentioned, the world of 2081 sees horses thriving in various exciting fields. It's a vibrant tapestry, and I'd like to take you on a guided tour, weaving through some of its highlights:
1. The Enduring Tradition of Riding:
One thing hasn't changed since the early days of horse history - our innate connection with humans through riding. The simple joy of being astride a horse, feeling the wind in your mane as you navigate trails, has a magic that defies time. It's a feeling both exhilarating and peaceful. My neighbour, the chestnut mare Tilly, lives for her weekly gallops through the rolling hills of Hayfield, her tail streaming behind her like a banner of joy.
While the "wild West" has long disappeared from our world, riding and riding schools thrive, especially in rural areas where people are reconnecting with nature. Here, we play a vital role, not just in leisure riding but also in therapeutic riding for those seeking comfort and solace. There are schools in every town, and people from all walks of life enjoy the magic of a shared journey on horseback.
2. The "Equestrian Olympias" – A Celebration of Skill:
Speaking of a modern marvel, let me tell you about the "Equestrian Olympias," a global gathering that celebrates all aspects of the horse world. It happens every two years, and every nation is invited to participate in competitions ranging from dressage, show jumping, and polo, to traditional skills like chariot races. It’s truly breathtaking to see horses from different breeds and countries coming together to showcase their unique talents. The last one held in Vienna, Austria was magnificent!
These competitions are a testament to the enduring athleticism and intelligence of our species. It’s amazing to watch horses, even those like myself from the sturdy draught breeds, demonstrate a blend of strength and agility that never fails to amaze me.
3. A Love for Racing:
Another way we play an essential role is on the racecourses, thrilling both crowds and participants with our speed and determination. Of course, racing remains a grand tradition, and we horses enjoy showcasing our strength and grace. Though horses now share the racing world with a few bioengineered athletes - engineered for speed, agility, and endurance – it’s still largely a "natural" arena. My niece, Poppy, dreams of becoming a champion racehorse and she often chats with me about how she admires the courage of our kin who race and test their mettle in the grand spectacles!
4. Beyond Competition – A World of Recreation:
Horses like me find fulfillment in many aspects beyond competition. There is a joy in simple companionship. Many families choose horses as their pet, a loyal companion and part of their family. The way children relate to a horse is so heartwarming, and I enjoy being around those innocent eyes filled with love and wonder.
Then there are all the fun things like riding through a forest, going for a swim, enjoying a stroll along a breezy beach. Or for those seeking something less "active" but just as satisfying, the simple joy of tending to a horse in a field, sharing a shared meal with humans under the wide-open sky, experiencing the calmness of nature. It is an embodiment of peace, quiet strength, and genuine contentment.
5. Technology and Horse Welfare:
We also have advanced technological innovations in this modern age. Gone are the days of cumbersome bits and reins. The introduction of "equitrack" chips and biofeedback equipment has brought about significant advancements in how we communicate with horses. I personally have a “thought tracker” chip implanted which allows me to express emotions and understand humans even better. These advances make the lives of horses a whole lot safer and better. It allows trainers to learn the subtle cues we horses communicate, leading to a better understanding between humans and their horses.
Our relationship has moved beyond physical strength, into a space of greater mutual understanding. Today, the focus is on harnessing the natural athletic abilities and gentle personalities that define the very soul of the horse. The use of this new tech is not just for us - it also allows horses to do amazing things like "voice-command riding" - truly a sign of the bond that’s growing between humans and their horses!
6. Horse Breeding in 2081:
Equine breeding has also evolved in leaps and bounds since the 20th century. Breeders around the world work hard to safeguard existing breeds while nurturing and developing newer ones with special talents and capabilities. For example, you'll find the “Equestrian Sport Horses” being bred in Denmark and The Netherlands - they are truly majestic creatures, designed specifically for endurance riding! The best part? The genetic integrity of the breed has not been compromised, with these special skills being a natural, non-manipulated advancement.
With advances in gene sequencing and genetic testing, horse owners and breeders are able to identify the specific genes that create specific desired qualities in their horses. That doesn't mean breeding "designer" horses, as we sometimes see in the wild horse populations around the globe - no, it's more about nurturing the strengths of our respective breeds. The objective is to ensure the wellbeing and adaptability of every breed for generations to come.
A Future Bright With HopeLooking forward, the future holds great promise for us, for horses. The connection between us and humans has matured. Today, we're recognised not just for our strength and endurance, but also for our intelligence, our ability to connect on a deeper level, and our undeniable spirit.
You know what my heart truly yearns for? I wish all people, young and old, had a chance to experience the simple joy of riding through a field on a sunny day, to understand that horses are much more than creatures of strength. We’re companions, friends, and part of the rich tapestry of life.
For centuries, our partnership has been a cornerstone of human civilization. I hope we can keep our stories alive, keep our legacy relevant and vibrant. It is a story that speaks of respect, loyalty, and unwavering dedication. We horses will keep galloping on, embracing each day with spirit, grace, and a grateful heart, just as the horse generations before us have done.
Until next time, happy trails!
